Koza was born in 1980 in a North Western NJ blizzard, driven to the
hospital in his father's VW Beetle. He grew up in a small town nestled
in the Appalachian Mountains a few miles from the Delaware River. His
influences began from listening to his parents records. At the age of
4 he knew every word front to back of most CSNY, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin,
Beatles, The Band and Hank Williams records. Summer time, when school
was out, he spent summers on the road in his grandparents' Winnebago
which his parents borrowed for road trips. The radio being set to whatever
local station had decent reception. The family traveled around the country
camping, fishing; living the simple life. These trips usually started
and finished at a family friends farmhouse in upstate NY. Sometimes
over a week was spent here. Dogs were running around with children chasing
them with no shoes on with parents chasing the whole lot with a smile
while bands were playing on a makeshift stage made of hay bails. This kind of upbringing definitely had an impact on him. Then at 17 he was out on the road alone, just traveling. - From state to state making friends he still keeps and visits today. Traveling with a tent, whatever money he had, a large musical collection and an old beat up circa 1950’s guitar and harmonica given to him by his grandfather. Stopping in beautiful settings to sit and write. After all this, he settled down in Hoboken, NJ for around 5 years. In a room overlooking NYC right on the Hudson River. Here he’d watch day turn into night and back into day playing his old guitar and penning lyrics. He says sometimes it plays itself and he just sings, and that maybe its possessed in a good way. He filled his notebooks with lyrics and music, and the ashtray with cigarette butts. During breaks from playing he listened to Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Ryan Adams, Pink Floyd, and anything else he could get his hands on. This included tuning into NYC college radio stations. This influenced his writing to a deeper and more diverse level. During this time he played in a few bands as well as solo. One was a rock/jam band, one was a pop/rock band, one played bluegrass, country, and folk music, and one was a blues band. Currently living back in North Western NJ he has been playing shows in the north eastern US. From the Wobbly Barn, VT, to Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, NJ, and Maxwell’s and the Whiskey Bar in Hoboken, NJ, to the Lions Den, Arelene’s Grocery, and The Living Room in NYC, as well as other venues throughout NY, NJ, PA, CT, and VT. Listen for his music on Tri-State Area radio stations as they spin songs from his new solo effort entitled ‘-Transition-’. A record which he wrote, recorded, and produced himself as well as played all the instruments. On the record he performed all vocals, various styles of guitar, piano, banjo, mandolin, bass, percussion, and harmonica. The album covers genres including folk, bluegrass, funk, rock and blues. Jordan is currently working on writing a new album as well as booking shows and promoting behind the last effort with the help of some beautiful friends. |
